justsomeguy
Web standards don't dictate which image formats you can use, PNG is a good format though.
aspnetguy
The only issue with PNG is that IE6 doesn't display transparent PNGs correctly

Synook
IE 6 can't display alpha transparency at all, no matter what format. However, it will render GIF index transparency, while PNGs index transparency parts will just turn up grey. The advantage of PNGs is that they can have up to 32 bit colour information, while GIFs can only have 8 bit colours. javierdl
Thanks a bunch Synook :)Thanks for confirming that I should go with GIFs. Not my preference to go for lesser formats, but as long as most will see them...JDL

If you need only binary transparency (i.e. completely transparent at one pixel, and transparency off to another), it's really best to make tests as to see which of the two formats will turn into a smaller file. justsomeguy
You can also use something like this to improve IE5's and IE6's support for PNG, CSS, and some positioning bugs:http://dean.edwards.name/IE7/
