Usually web hosts have nameservers that you have to point the domain to. They're just web addresses that you have to indicate to the domain registrar in order to get it to go to your site.Ask or check the help of your web host to see which nameservers they use.

a nameserver managages the DNS settings of your domain (aka where the domain points to). When you register a domain you point it first to a nameserver. If you are getting hosting with your domain from the sdaem company alot of times this is done for you.Next you need to then change the DNS settings to point to your web server. Again if you bought hosting witht he domain this is probably done for you. It all depends on the host you go with and what other services you get with the domain.Ifyou are just registering a stand alone domain then you will probably have to configure all these settings.

For a little more explanation, when you open a web browser and type in a name like "google.com", your browser doesn't know which server(s) it should go to. But your computer's internet connection is configured with one or more DNS servers to use (a DNS server is a nameserver). So your browser sends a request to the DNS server to do a DNS lookup on google.com. The DNS server will respond with the IP address for the google.com server, like 64.233.167.99. The web browser then sends the request for google.com to that IP address, which all the network equipment (routers, switches, hubs etc) knows how to route. Nothing knows how to route a name like google.com, only an IP address that indicates which network and subnet the server is hosted on.If you want to do a DNS lookup yourself, on Windows go to Start -> Run and enter "cmd". Then in the command prompt you can use the nslookup tool to look up DNS records. If you type "nslookup google.com" then you'll get the DNS records for google.com, and the nslookup tool will also tell you what DNS server it is using for the lookup.
