unplugged_web
This might be the wrong place to post this, but I just wanted some advice really. I have a site that will shortly be moved to a dedicated server and I've never used on before. Do dedicated servers have crons jobs and IonCubes? If not are they easy to install? How easy are crons to manage? I have two I want to add, both for different timesAlso I guess I can still upload the site via ftp?By the way the server will be a Linux server with FasthostsThanks
Synook
Do dedicated servers have crons jobs and IonCubes?Cron is a feature of Linux, all Linux servers have it. I'm not sure what IonCubes is, do you mean the product at http://www.ioncube.com/ ?How easy are crons to manage? There is control panel software installed, and you can also remotely run a terminal on the server through SSH using a program like PuTTY and control the cron jobs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CronAlso I guess I can still upload the site via ftp?As long as the server has an FTP server installed. If not you'll be able to install one easily.

Synook
From what I read at IonCube.com the code obfuscated by that encoder is packaged into an installer along with a "closed source execution engine", which then reads the obfuscated files, decodes them, and sends them to the interpreter. Thye have a Unix version of it, so there would seem to be no problems in running code encoded by it on your server.

unplugged_web
Sorry, one last question, where can I get PuTTy for a Mac from?
Synook
Apparently If you use a Mac running OS 10 or above, you can use Terminal an application native to the operating system, which can be found by going to the hard drive, then "Applications" folder and "Utilities" folder. It will bring you to a Unix terminal where you can run SSH.
aspnetguy
Apparentlylol that's because MAC OS 10+ is built on the UNIX kernel. I didn't realize that until recently when I was reading some rant by DHH (creater of Rails) about why developers should use a Mac and if you don't you're an idiot. It was an entertaining read. I guess I'm an idiot .
justsomeguy
With most dedicated servers you have full control over it. That means that you are responsible for installing software, setting up web sites, etc. You can restart the server if you need to. A lot of times you can ship the hosting company hardware (hard drives, etc) and they will install it in the server for you. If the server doesn't have the ioncube loader installed then you will need to install it yourself. You might be able to pay your host to install it for you, but they typically charge a premium to work on dedicated servers. Hopefully you chose the Linux server at fasthosts, if you chose the Windows one you won't be able to use cron (the Windows scheduler instead). You can download the install package for the ioncube loader here:http://www.ioncube.com/loaders.php

jeffman
The company I work for has a dedicated server set up to host most of our heavy content.I always imagined the Paranoid Pirate Ninja kept his server offshore in one of those James-Bond-style artificial volcanos, heavily patrolled by renegade navy seals and robotic dolphins. justsomeguy
Bah, artificial volcanos are so yesterday. The oxygen-free confines of the silos under Sealand work quite well. E Mare Libertas!
