What does this mean?

Open a File Tutorial on W3SchoolsI don't understand what this tutorial is trying to teach me, and part of the reason is that I don't really know what it means (in that context) to 'open a file'. Can somebody please explain to me or show me what this means? Thanks in advance

Okay, say you have a text file on your server. It has the text "Hello, world" in it. with the code in that tutorial, you can open the file and echo it's contents (writing "hello world" on the page). This is useful because you can have several pages all opening the text file, and when you change one file (the text file) all the pages change.
