  3. Ah, okay - lol. So it's like calling .js files from your pages instead of putting the JavaScript in every single page - or setting up your CSS in a way so as that you could very easily change the background color of all headers from green to blue - stuff like that... I think I got it now. Basically making the site really manageable for yourself to organize - not an actually system or programming language or anything like that, but the overall concept of making things easy to edit...Thanks for that Xenon Design,LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

I really don't have time to go digging for that - but it's possible that I could be wrong. That's some very interesting text - thanks for that. I knew that XHTML was supposed to be used as an application in XML, and not text - but I thought that wasn't supposed to happen yet, so I haven't worried about it. To be quite honest, I just use the text MIME type. That's some very helpful information for when I go to make the switch to 'real' XHTML.Thanks for the info,LifeInBinary.
  5. See here's the thing: My LAN cable was provided by my cable company, and what should be a plastic housing over the part that plugs in - is metal. It's like that on both ends. That's probably what the problem is. The actual cable is insulated though. Also, it shocks me when I touch any metal on the back of my pc - but only if I am holding the LAN cable. It also shocks me when I touch the female jack on either the laptop modem or the pc modem - even if I'm not touching the LAN cable. Here's the kicker: if I touch the part of the LAN cable that plugs in, and the metal around the female jack on my modem at the same time - that's when I get the absolute crap shocked out of me. So it seems like the problem would be in the modem on my pc and laptop, as well as the actual LAN cable. That seems like too much of a coincidence though - so maybe the problem really stems from the cable modem itself? I can't really afford to replace both those modems, or the cable modem - but maybe I could try getting a LAN cable that has plastic connectors. I need a longer one anyway. Thanks guys,LifeInBinary.
  6. Awesome, thank you. It does help. So anything that users can individually customize - like folders on an inbox, or 'favorites' on a video site, or maybe even a 'shopping cart' on online stores? Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  7. What is 'Pay Per Click' and 'Click 2 Pay' and all that? And what about affiliate plans? Do they pay off? I am thinking about making a website that has like every tutorial, code, and resource anyone would ever need to make websites - a web design one stop site. I would like to put ads on it and link to some other sites in the business (or any for that matter). How do people get paid for having ads on their site? How can I make money like they do? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Anyone know of sites or businesses that can hook me up? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  8. http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/p...lanBusinessPlusI'm looking at their 'Business Plus' plan on Linux servers... Does that seem like really awesome hosting? It does to me and I just want to make sure that I'm not missing any details - like something they should have support for but don't.Here is one thing I'm looking at: with their company, I can't use ASP or ColdFusion, and .htaccess at the same time. I really want to learn ASP or ColdFusion, but I think I could substitue that with PHP? Which one's better - and which one is easier as a first server-side language? I am leaning towards ColdFusion - Just because I have Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and Flash - they are a great group of programs, and I bet ColdFusion rocks as well. Thanks for the help,LifeInBinary.
  9. I was just wondering if it was only me and maybe my setup was unsafe or what? I have a cable modem, and I switch the LAN cable between my PC and my laptop quite often. Every single time I touch it I get the absolute crap shocked out of me. I mean, it's not a little shock - but it tingles all the way up my arm. It's so common for me that every time I go to touch the cable I just grit my teeth and wait for it, hoping I get the LAN cable all the way in the socket pretty quick - LOL.Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  10. I know I could Google it, but I figure I could get a much better idea of this if I just asked you guys instead.1) - What is CMS? I think it's Content Management System - but what is it, what does it do, what do you need to make it, how do you make it, and why do you need it?2) - What is 'front-end' and what is 'back-end'? I think front-end would be GUI, and back-end would be passwords? Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  11. I made it just messing around and I thought that I could put a little bit of red in it and take out the yellow and make it say Anders Moen for your banner. I would stretch it out to whatever resolution you want of course.LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

I think everyone learning HTML should just be in a good habit of closing all tags and using all lowercase for tags anyway. I did that as soon as I learned HTML (from this site of course) - before I even knew XHTML existed. For this reason, everything I have ever done with websites should pretty much be up to standards with XHTML. I think XHTML is just another way of saying, "Stop being lazy and follow the rules people."LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

@moderators - I think this post should be pinned. For newbies if nothing else. That way they here all of this conversation as soon as they look at the forums for HTML.LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

At least they tell them it's depricated. I mean, since it still works I guess it's up for grabs. I'll be honest, I still use <font> just because it's a lot easier than styles for me.LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

Ah, I forgot about that. It's been a while since I looked at the HTML tutorial - anything but the references anyway. I do think they should state that in the front though, instead of letting newcomers learn an old markup then telling them it's wrong and that they should learn something else. It would even be easier on them if they knew it was depricated beforehand so that way they aren't wasting their time.LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

This is a very good point - I didn't think about the possibility of a negative outcome. I just know that lazy and cheap people won't stop being lazy and cheap - and so HTML will continue to exist 100 years from now. I just need to realize that you can't force people to do what they should. I think the best thing we could do is to spread the word of XHTML and try to get newbies to realize that it is XHTML they are interested in and not HTML. I think a good start with that would be for w3schools to add something like I said to the begining or their HTML tutorial. I also forgot about that. People interested in web design think they are looking for HTML. That's another reason that w3schools should keep the tutorial, but inform users of XHTML before they learn the wrong stuff.LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

They do. The XHTML one anyway. I do think that w3schools should put something like this in the begining of the HTML tutorials though:HTML is now outdated so to speak. W3Consortium has officially stated that XHTML is to replace HTML. If you are interested in building web sites for the first time, we suggest that you instead view our XHTML tutorial - as to maintain up to date with the current standards. Not trying to nit-pick, it's just that I have a slightly different view than you do - and I am almost certain that everyone you speak to about this will be 50/50 between our two standpoints. So this would be an acceptable compromise, I would assume.LifeInBinary.

    Why HTML?

This topic should probably be in suggestions - but the HTML/XHTML people should have some good input. You make some very good points FireFoxRocks, I have asked myself the same questions. I believe it is a bit of history. Even though XHTML is supposed to be the new standard, unfortunately HTML is still very widely in use. I think the problem is that people started learning HTML first and never realized that the standards were changing to XHTML. If they did realize that the standards changed, then they probably just didn't want to have to go through and recode their websites - thinking, "Well, it's perfectly functionally so I don't see why I need to waste my time with that." - and most website owners probably hired somebody else to code their website - and it's way more likely that people like us know that HTML should be XHTML than for website owners who never touch code. I also agree with boen_robot about the fact that if you need to edit an already HTML-compliant website - then you need to know the correct syntax for HTML, and not for XHTML - which is why I think that it should still be on w3schools.Here is another opinion of mine on the matter. If XHTML is truly supposed to replace HTML - by the mandate of the w3consortium - then I think they should take up a legal pursuit to have all browsers stop supporting HTML tags, and force everyone to make the switch to XHTML. That way, people already using HTML would have to edit their code to validate with XHTML or not have a website - and all new people learning to make websites would have to learn XHTML instead of HTML. That's my solution anyway.Great conversation starter though - thanks for that.LifeInBinary.
  19. Here is an image about like what I have in mind for you - tell me what you think...LifeInBinary.
  20. andersmoen, it looks like you are really comming around great with this. I see lots of improvement since the first thing you've shown us. Keep up the good work.I've tossed around a couple of ideas for your graphics I'm making you - just to let you know. However, I will take me a bit more time to get done - I am working on two personal websites, and one for a client at the moment.Personal website number one:http://www.iribbit.net/i/lifeisbinary/interface/Personal website number two:http://www.iribbit.net/i/lifeisbinary/family/Just thought maybe you could get some inspiration. I do the same thing with my stuff that you are talking about. I make all of the images with Macromedia Fireworks (same thing as Photoshop) and manually slice them up so that I can use the images as bg's for cells and divs. It works great.Wishing you all the best,LifeInBinary.
  21. Nevermind. I figured out a much easier way. I just added valign="top" to the <td>.So easy, and right in front of my eyes.Sorry I bothered you guys with this...Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  22. I'm in the same boat. Don't feel bad. I am going to check out those two links. If I figure it out first, I'll help you do it for yourself. If you figure it out first, could you help me as well? It's gonna be a close call on who gets this first, because I probably know just a little bit more about making websites - but I also have a HUGE lack of personal time that I can put into this. I got college, a web design job, freelance web design, a newborn, designing about 3 personal websites for myself, making someone some graphics... I'll try as soon as I can. I check forums though because I ask for help on here, so if you are trying to figure this out and come across any challenges blocking your way - let me know because it might be something I already know about.Good luck with you endeavor.Hope you get this done on time,LifeInBinary.
  23. You should help me croatiankid, we could be partners... We'll take over the WHOLE WORLD 1 pixel at a time!!!Forget the size - we'll market it only to T3 users :)Get back with me as soon as you can - I can't wait to get started!LifeInBinary.
  24. That's friggin crazy. That's all I have to say about that. Lol.Do you know of a link or article anywhere? What did he do to make the pixels sellable? Did he just calculate the number of pixels for their banners or what? Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  25. Thanks for that input roondog. I was leaning towards the green myself. The orange is the first thing I created for it though - then I had the idea to make other colors to compare. If you or anyone else would like to see the orange one just let me know and I'll post it.Thanks,LifeInBinary.
