niche
does the width of a border come out of the margin side, the padding side, or is it split?
Ingolme
The border is between the margin and padding. In total, it adds to space that the element takes. The width inside the border will be the specified width + padding. The border doesn't cover the space of the margin or the padding. It takes up its own space between them.

wirehopper
Check out Firebug's layout feature - it really helps to show what's happening.
