Well have you ever tried anything else? I used Notepad for years before I saw the light (and the syntax highlighty colors). If all you want is a little extra help from a lightweight program, like some auto-indenting, syntax coloring, maybe insert common code chunks, check out ConTEXT. If you want a little more, like FTP connections, code auto-formatting etc, check out PSPad. I use them both for various things, it's a real big help when writing code, it makes it much easier to instantly determine the structure of the code you're looking at. And both programs are lightweight, fast, and free, and both of them have communities in the forums. These programs really do save a lot of time. ConTEXT, for example, can save any file as an HTML page that shows the source code syntax highlighted through HTML. PSPad has a command to auto-format HTML, you can paste in a big ugly chunk of code, auto-format it, and have nicely indented and laid out code instantly. The name of the game is saving time, and these programs do it quickly and free.

well, with other programs you can't view source and start editing it.LG

Well, shoot me in the foot! I was about to tell you that on the Programs tab of Internet Options, a user could specify the text editor the would like to use when viewing source in IE. Unfortunantly, the HTML Editor option there seems not do anything. So, perhaps there is an IE plugin/toolbar that adds that feature, like in Firefox?Being contrained to a single editor (especially one that I don't care for) annoys me, this is yet another reason to switch from IE to Firefox or Opera.Firefox users will, by default, use the Firefox source viewer, which is nice with syntax highlighting and such. But if you wanted to use another program, the ViewSourceWith extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/394/Opera users can use any text editor, and by default Opera uses Wordpad in Windows or xedit in Linux

yep, been there, done that.I am not able to use any of those other browsers right now, so that's why I use notepad.LG

When you install ConTEXT, you can have it replace Notepad, and every call to Notepad goes to ConTEXT.You should also just be able to specify which source editor you want to use. I see your 'IE is fine' comment, I don't know if IE can do that or not, but it's definately not fine.

If you like tabbed documents, that's also a feature in Crimson. It really is great, not having to change windows. :)

At first glance I think I will like conText editor better because I can integrate diffrent compilers with it. Although I like the built in FTP of Crimson...hmmm decisions, decisions. :)

Yeah, when you install ConTEXT it asks if you want to replace Notepad or not. The best thing about these editors is that they are all free, and they all play nice together. Install a few, and give em a go. There are some editors with better features than ConTEXT, but it has always just felt right to me.

Have you used the feature that allows you to 'hook-up' a compiler (ie for c++ or java)??If so, was it difficult? I am going to try this after work today. I installed conText and Borland c++ compiler yesterday and got the compiler working but didn't have time to link it to conText.

I haven't done that personally, but that is actually an entry in the FAQ:

How to use Borland C++ 5.5 free compiler with ConTEXT?Open a .cpp file to testSelect "Options / Environment options / Execute Keys".Select the cpp group, if there isn't any, click "Add" and enter the extension, in this case "cpp" (without quotes)Now click on the cpp - F9, I'm going to assume that you installed Borland compiler in the folder "C:\Bcc\", if you installed in other folder, just replace it.Options for cpp - F9: Execute: C:\BCC\Bin\Bcc32.exeStart in: %pParameters: %fCheck "Editing before execution"Check "Capture console output"Then click "OK"
If you have problems, search the forum for "borland", there have been a couple threads about capturing console output or things like that.

Hey, however said Dreamwaver 8 doesn't have tabs? It has and it not only that. It's whole interface, every tab (not only the ones for the documents) could be put/docked anywhere on the screen. See for yourself:dreamwaver87pk.th.pngI have shown all default interface group to show the richness of this editor, but I'm actually using only a small bit of all extras among which the reference most frequently.[edit] Initially I was, but I lost the URL to the thumbnail. That's the first time I post to imageshack.us, so I don't know how the URL of the thumb differs from the real deal. Sorry. I'll see what I can do.[/edit][edit] Pha. It's a ".th" just before the end of the file name. Good :) [/edit][edit]@aspnetguy I prefer text editors too. I mean just see how my layout is setup. As for freeness, there are ways around the price tag if you know what I mean :) . [/edit]

I think all the comercial editors have too many features sometimes making it easier to use notepad. I tried one that had syntax highlighting once, but the highlighting wasn't worth getting rid of the easyness of notepad. also, this computer is not my own, so I can't replace notepad.LG

I'm not sure what you mean by the easyness of Notepad. With something like ConTEXT (or really, any other editor), you can set it up so that you can right-click on a file and do Send To to open it, or right-click and click on Edit to open it, or even just double-click to open the file in the editor. It pops right up, it colors everything for you, it auto-indents, I just don't see any advantages of using Notepad.OK, I'm putting you on notice Little Goat. You must install ConTEXT immediately. Do it now. You're not doing it. I can tell. I find your lack of faith disturbing. Install ConTEXT, and your journey to the dark side will be complete.

Highlighters for other languages. You can write your own highlighter file to highlight whatever language you want, but a lot of them are built-in. Most (all?) of the highlighters on the download page are user-written for whatever language they were wanting highlighting for. There's even a highlighter highlighter, to highlight the highlighter file (under "C" for "ConTEXT Highlighter Files"). You copy them into the highlighters folder in the ConTEXT install folder, and restart ConTEXT to use them. You can select them from the dropdown manually, or do Tools -> Set Highlighter -> Customize Types to have a certain highlighter automatically apply to certain file types (i.e., if you open a .uc file, select the UnrealScript highlighter).
